The Scientist

"You're lucky you are not younger."

Words from a dog-eared book swam to the surface and I suddenly *knew* what
Edmund White's young narrator meant:

"I felt like a scientist must when he's about to bring off the experiment of
his career: outwardly calm, inwardly jubilant, already braced for
disappointment."

I had that ready out, "just kidding". If she laughed and jokingly pushed her
bum out at me, I could teasingly slap it, digging my fingers into her sides.
Watch her collapse in tickled torment and it would say no more about me than any
other silly jest.

"Or what?"
